Long before national television broadcasts dissected Clark’s logo threes, Carver-Hawkeye Arena served as the shared home for two of Iowa’s most prominent basketball figures. Connor McCaffery, son of long-time Iowa men’s basketball head coach Fran McCaffery, spent six seasons playing for the Hawkeyes between 2017 and 2023. Clark arrived in Iowa City in the fall of 2020, quickly rewriting the NCAA record books while leading the women's program to consecutive national championship game appearances.
Their connection began behind closed doors in the athletic facilities where men's and women's teams shared practice schedules, strength training blocks, and media responsibilities. The friendship developed quietly over two years of overlapping collegiate athletics. In August 2023, Clark made their status public on Instagram, sharing photos from a boat trip with the caption, "Best end to summer." McCaffery confirmed the timeline months later, posting an anniversary tribute on April 24, 2024: "One year w the best doing life w u has been easy, and you’ll always be my go to… from day 1 to forever."
