Before the group conquered North America, they cut their teeth in Europe. BMG Ariola dropped "Tearin' Up My Heart" across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland in early 1997. The single reached No. 4 on the German Singles Chart, propelling their self-titled debut album to runaway success in central Europe.
Recognizing the record’s transatlantic crossover potential, Clive Calder’s Jive Records signed the group for American distribution in 1998. Jive timed the domestic single release alongside a relentless promotional blitz on MTV’s fledgling Total Request Live (TRL). The video, directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky, featured the five band members dancing in warehouse staging, wearing tracksuits and tank tops while executing precise, high-impact choreography.
The track peaked on US radio in late 1998, laying the groundwork for NSYNC's historic commercial reign. By the time they embarked on their massive, stage-rigged PopOdyssey tour in 2001, "Tearin' Up My Heart" had evolved. It transformed from an energetic dance single into an arena rock-pop staple, featuring live electric guitars, explosive pyrotechnics, and extended vocal arrangements that demonstrated the group's technical vocal prowess.
