The true bottleneck of high-end anime recreation is rarely the suit; it is the face and hair. Anime character designs feature exaggerated eye-to-face ratios, sharp jaw angles, and gravity-defying hair volumes that clash with real-world physics. Schunk’s background in self-applied beauty cosmetics became her greatest asset.
To make Asuka’s sharp anime features work in high-definition video, Schunk relied on strategic tape lifts hidden beneath the wig line. This elevated her cheek structures and accentuated eye symmetry. Instead of using standard day makeup, she applied theater-grade matte foundations to prevent digital camera sensors from turning skin oils into harsh hot spots under studio lights.
Her wig work shows a similar level of discipline. Standard out-of-the-box synthetic wigs lie limp and reveal their lace foundations under motion. Schunk systematically crimps the under-layers of synthetic hair using micro-corrugated irons before brushing them out. This process creates an internal mesh of friction and volume that supports high pony-tails without sagging. For her Rei Ayanami build, she individually styled the fringe with water-soluble adhesives to preserve the character’s sharp, pointed bangs throughout lengthy stream sessions.
