What happens if Maximo dies and his body falls into unreachable rapids, or if Arthur flees an ambush and never searches him? This is where the engine’s recovery logic takes over. The title applies an encounter-counter system to Maximo’s presence in the open world.
The engine gives Arthur three procedural attempts to secure the map directly from the traveler. If you cross paths with Maximo three times without securing the paper, or if he is killed and his body despawns unlooted, the script retires the NPC permanently. The asset does not evaporate into limbo.
Once Maximo is officially retired, High Stakes Treasure Map 1 transfers directly into the catalogs of the game's fences. Players can walk into Seamus’s barn at Emerald Ranch, visit the black market stall in Saint Denis, or drop by Rhodes to purchase the item across the counter. While some player reports suggest the inventory trigger requires reaching Chapter 3 unlock requirements, testing across clean save files proves the document becomes available at fences within three to five in-game days of Maximo's final despawn, even during Chapter 2.
