Vertical transitions inside residential dwellings require thoughtful space planning. A direct, linear staircase rising 4 vertical blocks consumes 4 horizontal blocks of floor space, quickly cutting small rooms in half.
The standard solution for compact floor plans is a 3x3 spiral staircase design built around a central pillar. Place a central post using stripped logs, fences, or stone walls. Wrap stairs around this 1x1 axis in a clockwise or counterclockwise spiral. Because stairs naturally form corner connections when placed orthogonally, you maintain a continuous, walkable ramp within a tight 9-block footprint.
For large interior house builds, grand dual-wing staircases work best. Use inverted stairs on the underside of each step to hide the jagged, raw profile. This creates a clean, sloped soffit underneath, opening up usable space beneath the flight for storage chests, an enchanting corner, or an indoor planter.
