Can I legally travel to Bir Tawil and claim it?
No international body or national government recognizes individual land claims over Bir Tawil. Reaching the area requires passing through Egyptian or Sudanese border security zones. Entering without explicit military clearances risks arrest, confiscation of equipment, and charges of entering restricted security corridors.
Why doesn't Egypt or Sudan just split Bir Tawil down the middle?
Dividing Bir Tawil would require a comprehensive treaty resolving the entire border. Doing so would force both countries to reach a final, legally binding decision on the Hala'ib Triangle. Because neither government is willing to compromise on Hala'ib's lucrative Red Sea access and natural resources, the status of Bir Tawil remains intentionally frozen.
Does Bir Tawil have any fresh water sources?
The territory contains no perennial rivers, lakes, or reliable surface water. Seasonal wadis carry brief flash-flood runoffs every few years, and sparse brackish wells exist primarily for nomadic livestock or artisanal mining machinery. Any long-term human settlement would require massive, uninterrupted supply convoys or industrial-scale deep-aquifer drilling that costs millions of dollars.
