Public confusion frequently blurs Romani people with Irish Travellers. Popular reality television programs compounded this error by using the word interchangeably across completely different ethnic groups. They are genetically, historically, and culturally distinct communities.
Irish Travellers, known as Mincéirs or Pavee in their native Cant/Shelta language, are an indigenous nomadic ethnic group of Irish origin. Genetic studies trace their divergence from the sedentary Irish population back to the seventeenth century, unrelated to the Indo-Aryan migrations of the Romani. While Irish Travellers also experience severe antigypsyism and harassment, applying Romani labels to them, or vice versa, is historically inaccurate and erases the specific traditions of both groups.
Within the broader Romani diaspora, distinct self-identifications exist across geographic regions. The term "Roma" is an umbrella classification adopted by international bodies like the Council of Europe, but specific groups preserve their own endonyms based on historic migration routes.
| Group / Term | Origin & Diaspora | Status & Acceptance |
|---|---|---|
| Roma / Romani | Originates from Northern India; predominant across Central and Eastern Europe. | The globally accepted, preferred endonym across academic, legal, and international bodies. |
| Sinti | Romani subgroup primarily residing in Germany, Austria, and Northern Italy. | Preferred self-identification. Often paired formally as "Roma and Sinti." |
| Romanichal | Romani subgroup that settled in the United Kingdom during the 16th century. | Common self-descriptor in Britain and North America; some members use the historical term internally. |
| Irish Travellers (Pavee) | Indigenous nomadic minority native to Ireland; distinct Celtic roots. | Not Romani. Recognized as an ethnic minority in Ireland and the UK under proper tribal names. |
| The "G-word" (Gypsy) | Middle English corruption of "Egyptian," applied indiscriminately by outsiders. | Offensive exonym and ethnic slur when used by non-Romani individuals. |
