To grasp the true demographic scale of the city, one must separate municipal boundaries from the sprawling urban expanse. The municipal City of Los Angeles covers roughly 469 square miles, housing an estimated 3,822,238 residents based on recent U.S. Census Bureau estimates. Broaden the perimeter to the borders of Los Angeles County, and that figure surges to nearly 9.7 million. Step back further to the Greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, which stretches across Los Angeles and Orange counties, and the population reaches approximately 12.8 million, expanding to over 18.5 million when factoring in the wider five-county Combined Statistical Area.
The city took a visible hit at the start of the decade. Between April 2020 and July 2022, the city shed more than 75,000 residents, a drop fueled by corporate shutdowns, closed university dorms, and a sudden shift toward remote work that freed mid-career professionals to seek cheaper acreage in Nevada, Arizona, and Texas. The bleeding, however, did not continue unchecked. By late 2024 and through 2025, annual net losses shrank to fractional percentages before steadying, disproving early predictions that the city would crater below 3.7 million.
