Stephen Wilson Jr. did not take an elevator straight to Music Row. Raised in rural southern Indiana by a single father who was a boxer, Wilson spent his early years inside boxing gyms and laboratories. He earned a degree in microbiology, worked as a food scientist, and spent years patenting inventions before committing fully to a guitar. That disciplined, blue-collar background bleeds into his songwriting mechanics.
His father died in 2018. That loss triggered a creative flood that yielded søn of dad, a massive 22-song record that processes mortality across nearly an hour and a half of music. The album avoids sanitized studio gloss. Wilson tracks his songs with percussive, violently strummed acoustic instruments that rattle against the fretboard. Tracks like "Father's Son" and "Cuckoo" set a heavy, introspective tone, but "Year to Be Young (1994)" provides the kinetic release valve that turns private family memories into a universal collective experience.
