The centerpiece of Jerry Matheson Park is its sprawling wooden playground structure. Built with multi-level catwalks, turrets, balance bridges, and hidden crawl spaces, the main playscape functions as an open-ended adventure course. Kids can traverse tire bridges, scale climbing nets, and navigate timber ramps without touching the ground. Unlike plastic play sets that dictate a single path, this wooden complex accommodates active hide-and-seek games, tag, and creative roleplay.
Safety and accessibility receive careful separation on-site. Younger children can easily get overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the main fortress, so the city installed a dedicated toddler play area just steps away. This low-slung zone features smaller slides, gentle ramps, tot-sized bucket swings, and low-profile sensory panels.
Parental supervision requires an active eye here. Because the wooden ramparts feature multiple blind corners and layered passageways, sightlines can disappear quickly when the park fills up on Saturday afternoons. Ground surfaces are layered with engineered wood fiber mulch to cushion falls, though barefoot running is definitely discouraged due to natural splinter risks on older timber handrails.
