The character of Tyler Owens could have easily slipped into a two-dimensional caricature. Clad in a cowboy hat and driving a customized truck outfitted with augers that drill straight into the asphalt, Owens presents as a reckless YouTube influencer chasing online clout. Powell worked extensively with real storm chasers across the Great Plains to give Owens an undercurrent of genuine atmospheric obsession.
Owens respects the raw violence of the sky. Powell leaned into that balance, crafting a protagonist who treats nature with reverence despite his reckless public persona. The chemistry between Edgar-Jones' analytical academic and Powell's instinct-driven chaser became the spine of the film. Their rapport worked precisely because the production embraced rough edges rather than pristine studio polish.
