The combat architecture explains why interest in the game never waned during its period of mobile confinement. Grumpyface constructed an active turn-based combat system heavily inspired by Nintendo's Paper Mario and Super Mario RPG. Battles take place across a fixed three-lane grid where positioning, action point management, and rhythmic button prompts dictate success.
Every turn grants the squad a pool of shared Star Points. Players must decide whether to spend points on basic strikes, defensive barriers, or costly character abilities. Steven acts as the ultimate support anchor, healing allies with his ukulele or mitigating party-wide damage with his shield. Garnet operates as the primary shield-breaker, using timed strikes to shred armored opponents. Pearl provides precision lane piercing with her spear, while Amethyst inflicts multi-target whip lashes that inflict status debuffs.
Deeper tactical variance emerges through playable Crystal Gems and fusions unlocked as the story progresses. Players can draft Lapis Lazuli, Bismuth, Peridot, and Connie Maheswaran into battle formations. When team synergy meters max out during combat, compatible Gems merge into towering powerhouses. Players can summon Steg, Smoky Quartz, Rainbow Quartz 2.0, Sunstone, and Obsidian. Each fusion unleashes devastating cinematic flourishes that wipe out enemy waves. Grumpyface paired these offensive options with custom badges and team builds, allowing players to slot specialized gear that boosts critical hit chances, lowers ability costs, or turns fallen foes into healing pools.
