Reaching No. 4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in mid-1984, the track proved that Billy Idol was far more than an MTV punk caricature. It cemented his reputation as an artist capable of blending gothic literature, dark romance, and cutting-edge synth production into massive commercial hits. The song broke the rigid boundaries separating post-punk, new wave, and hard rock.
That hybrid DNA explains why the song remains widely sampled and covered across genres. Artists from The Weeknd to synthwave pioneers like Gunship have lifted its brooding, nocturnal mood. Whenever contemporary pop turns cold, introspective, and synthetic, it echoes the template Idol, Lister, and Stevens forged in 1983.
