To understand why Emilia took so long to develop romantic interest, one must understand her state of mind throughout Season 1. Emilia was not playing hard to get. She was emotionally stunted. Physically, she appears as an eighteen-year-old half-elf, but having spent nearly a century frozen in Elior Forest, her cognitive maturity at the series start hovered closer to that of an early adolescent. Compounding this, her artificial spirit guardian, Puck, intentionally suppressed her childhood memories to shield her from the guilt of her past, effectively locking her inside an emotional bubble.
Subaru’s initial affection overwhelmed her. In the Royal Capital, he placed her on an untouchable pedestal, showering her with declarations of undying loyalty that she could neither comprehend nor trust. To Emilia, who had faced ostracization her entire life due to her physical resemblance to the Jealous Witch Satella, unconditional love felt dangerous. She assumed Subaru harbored unrealistic expectations that she would eventually fail to satisfy.
Everything fractured during Arc 4. When Puck abruptly severed their pact inside the Sanctuary, the barrier preserving Emilia’s fragile sense of security collapsed. Left utterly alone, stripped of magical support, and tasked with facing the grueling Tomb trials to liberate the Sanctuary, she spiraled into acute emotional withdrawal. She lacked a foundational sense of self-worth. Until she could confront who she was, she had no capacity to process romantic love for anyone else.
