How to Lose a Popularity Contest borrows classic tropes from early 2000s teen staples like Mean Girls and 10 Things I Hate About You, retooling them for an era driven by hyper-curated online presence. The story tracks an outcast senior determined to dismantle her school's rigid social hierarchy by actively aiming to become the least popular student on campus.
Her scheme hits a snag when she crosses paths with Hudson’s character, a charismatic student caught between surviving the school's cutthroat peer ecosystem and preserving his genuine identity. As their competing social agendas collide, their staged antagonistic stunts morph into genuine camaraderie, leading to public embarrassments, calculated cafeteria confrontations, and an inevitable romantic tension. The screenplay balances slapstick campus antics with real-world anxiety surrounding peer validation and digital reputation.
