The English language constantly sheds words that carry violent historical freight. As global digital communication puts local idioms under intense scrutiny, phrases that once felt innocuous to casual speakers are evaluated against the lived experiences of marginalized groups.
The label given to the Romani people carried centuries of criminalization, state-sanctioned exile, and social exclusion across the European continent. While certain subgroups retain the right to reclaim and celebrate it on their own terms, substituting "Roma" or "Romani" in everyday speech requires minimal effort. Dropping idioms rooted in ethnic theft takes even less. Replacing an outdated, externally imposed misnomer with a community’s actual name acknowledges basic human dignity without erasing history.
