The leap from the college rehearsal rooms of Baton Rouge, where the first film shot, to the top of the Broadway landscape was historically swift. In 2016, songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul tapped Platt to originate the titular role in Dear Evan Hansen. Playing an anxious, isolated high school senior grappling with mental health, social media alienation, and tragedy, Platt unlocked an emotional reservoir that left audiences visibly shaken eight times a week at the Music Box Theatre.
At age 23, Platt won the 2017 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical, becoming the youngest solo recipient in the category's history. When the cast recording collected a Grammy Award and a live promotional television performance earned a Daytime Emmy, Platt stood just an Oscar shy of achieving EGOT status before his 25th birthday. The frantic nervousness that made Benji Applebaum so endearing had evolved into a gut-wrenching dramatic instrument that redefined theatrical performance in the late 2010s.
