Tik-Tok is not human. Invented by Smith & Tinker, the round, copper-plated automaton functions via three distinct clockwork wind-up keys: one for thinking, one for speaking, and one for moving. When Dorothy winds him up and sends him into the Ornament Room, he carries the burden of being the group's last tactical hope before Dorothy must risk her own life.
Tik-Tok methodically inspects the artifacts, calling out two incorrect guesses while his internal mechanisms tick down. Then, silence falls. Dorothy and the Nome King peer into the room to discover the mechanical man frozen mid-stride, his arm outstretched toward an antique vase. His movement key has run completely down. The Nome King allows Dorothy to enter the chamber with her mechanical man wind-up key, ostensibly just to wind him up so he can finish his turn.
Inside the room, a whispered revelation occurs. Tik-Tok reveals that his thought mechanism never completely expired. He stopped moving on purpose to pull Dorothy into the room beside him. Because he was down to his third and final guess, he wanted Dorothy close enough to observe the result. Before he can make that final choice, his wound-down springs truly give out, leaving him stranded. In his final, unprompted twitch, he transforms into an ornament, leaving Dorothy entirely on her own with three guesses left.
